How do you actually use a panty liner?

Peel the backing strip off the adhesive, centre the liner in your underwear with the sticky side down, and press it firmly so it stays in place. The process is nearly identical to putting on a pad, just with a smaller, thinner product. Most liners are changed every 4 to 8 hours, or sooner if you notice dampness, odour, or discomfort.

Quick facts

  • Same basic mechanic as a pad: peel, place, press, just scaled down to the liner's smaller size

  • Centring matters less precisely than with a pad, since liners are shorter and mainly need to sit over the centre of the underwear's crotch area

  • Most liners don't have wings, though some maxi and overnight-style liners do for extra hold

  • Change interval is generally 4 to 8 hours, longer than the interval typically recommended for a pad during active flow, since the fluid volume liners handle is lower

  • Disposal is identical to a pad: wrap it, bin it, never flush it

Step by step

  1. Wash your hands before and after handling a liner, same as with any period or hygiene product.

  2. Unwrap the liner and peel the paper strip off the adhesive on the underside.

  3. Position the liner centred in your underwear, sticky side down, aligned with the crotch area.

  4. Press down along its length so the adhesive makes full contact with the fabric.

  5. If it has wings, fold them around the outer edges of the underwear and press them onto the underside, same as with a pad.

  6. Change every 4 to 8 hours, or sooner if it feels damp, starts to smell, or you notice any discomfort.

  7. Wrap the used liner in tissue or its own wrapper and dispose of it in a bin. Never flush it, for the same plumbing reasons a pad shouldn't be flushed.

What's actually different from wearing a pad

The mechanics are close enough that anyone who's used a pad already knows most of what they need to know. The differences are mostly about scale and context rather than technique. A liner is shorter and thinner, so precise front-to-back centring matters less than with a pad, where uneven placement can genuinely cause side leakage. Most liners skip wings entirely, since they're not managing enough fluid volume to need the extra securing that wings provide on a pad.

The change interval is the other meaningful difference. Because liners handle a much smaller, steadier volume than active period flow, the commonly cited window is 4 to 8 hours rather than the tighter 4 to 6 hour guidance for pads during a period. That said, comfort and hygiene are still good reasons to change sooner if a liner feels used, regardless of the general guideline.

FAQ's

Do panty liners need wings to stay in place?

img

Most don't, and manage to stay secure without them since they're handling a much smaller amount of fluid than a pad. Some maxi or overnight-style liners do include wings for extra hold, particularly if worn for a longer stretch.

Can you wear a panty liner overnight?

img

Yes, for discharge or light spotting, though it's worth choosing a liner explicitly designed for longer wear if you plan to leave it on through a full night's sleep, rather than assuming a standard daytime liner will hold up equally well.

How is disposing of a liner different from disposing of a pad?

img

It isn't. Wrap it in its own wrapper or tissue and dispose of it in a bin, and never flush it, for the same reason pads shouldn't be flushed: the material doesn't disintegrate and can block plumbing.
