Why pads have a shelf life at all
A pad isn't one material — it's a top sheet, an absorbent core (usually wood pulp or a superabsorbent gel layer), a leak-proof back sheet, and an adhesive strip, all bonded together. Each of those components ages differently.
The adhesive is the first to go. It's formulated to stay tacky for a defined period; after that it can dry out or turn brittle, which is why an old pad is more likely to bunch up or shift during the day. The absorbent core is next — cellulose and gel polymers can lose some of their fluid-holding capacity over years, particularly if the pack has been exposed to heat or humidity, which speeds up the process. None of this happens overnight, and none of it makes the pad "toxic" — it just makes it less reliable exactly when you need it to be dependable.
This is also why storage conditions matter as much as the date itself. A pack kept in a hot, humid bathroom cabinet will degrade faster than the same pack kept in a cool, dry drawer — so two packs manufactured on the same day can have meaningfully different real-world shelf lives depending on where they've been sitting.
If you can't find a date on an older pack, the safe default is to treat it as being near the end of a typical 3–5 year window rather than assume it's still fresh — and to prioritise using it soon or replacing it if you have a newer pack on hand.
